Happy Friday, Naperville families! 🎃
This is the big one. Halloween itself lands next Saturday, but the actual family weekend is this one — pumpkins racing downhill on wheels, trick-or-treating at Naper Settlement’s 1830s houses, and a car wash on 75th that has turned its tunnel into a drive-through haunted house. Downtown parking will be a mess by 11 AM Saturday, so plan accordingly. Jessica DeVries’ fall guide is back down below for everything we couldn’t fit.
🎃 Naperville’s Biggest Halloween Weekend

📅 This Week’s Top 3 Family Picks
Decorated pumpkins on wheels racing down a grassy hill as costumed families cheer
Pick #1
⚡ This Weekend Only
The Naperville Pumpkin Race — Gourds on Wheels, Racing Downhill, Free to Watch 🎃
📍 Rotary Hill, 443 Aurora Ave. (by Moser Tower), Naperville
💰 FREE to attend • racing kit extra if you want to compete
👶 All ages • best for 3–12
🕑 Sat Oct 24, noon–3 PM (community heats 1–2 PM)
Someone looked at a pumpkin ten years ago and thought “wheels,” and now it’s a Naperville institution. Decorated pumpkins mounted on axles get released down Rotary Hill two at a time while a crowd yells at them. There’s also a pumpkin decorating contest, a costume contest, games and food vendors, and the whole thing benefits the Turning Pointe Autism Foundation. The 10th annual run is this Saturday. You can just show up and watch for nothing — most people do.

💕 Why We Love It
It’s the rare free event where spectating is genuinely the main event — you don’t need a ticket, a reservation or a plan. Park in the Van Buren deck and walk in. Costumes are encouraged, and the hill is a hill, so bring a stroller you don’t mind pushing uphill once.
Costumed kids trick-or-treating at a historic 1830s farmhouse porch
Pick #2
⚡ This Weekend Only
Family Spooktacular — Trick-or-Treating at 1830s Houses, Plus a Disney Tribute Band 👻
📍 Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville
💰 $15 adults • $10 ages 4–12 • under 4 free
👶 Built for ages 3–12
🕑 Sat Oct 24, 10 AM–2 PM • Sun Oct 25, noon–4 PM
Brand new this year, and the premise is good: kids trick-or-treat at the Settlement’s historic homes — the same buildings half of Naperville toured on a third-grade field trip. Add a fright-free haunted house inflatable, slime-making at Ghoul School, canvas painting with Pinot’s Palette, laser tag and food trucks. The headliner is The Little Mermen & The Princess Pals doing two 60-minute Disney sets each day — 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM Saturday, 12:30 and 2:30 PM Sunday. Grown-ups get a Spooky Spirits Bar, which feels fair.

💕 Why We Love It
“Fright-free” is the part worth paying for. If you have a four-year-old who wants Halloween but cannot handle Halloween, this is the one. Sunday is the calmer day — Saturday morning will be shoulder to shoulder, and Howlin’ at the Moon (21+) takes over the same grounds Saturday evening, so parking tightens up fast.
View through a windshield into a fog-filled Halloween car wash tunnel lit purple and green
Pick #3
⚡ Tonight & All Weekend
The Haunted Car Wash — Yes, Really. Fog, Scares, and You Never Leave the Car 🚗
📍 Brightside Car Wash, 1095 E. 75th St., Naperville
💰 $8 online • $10 at the gate • per car, not per kid
👶 All ages • you control the windows
🕑 Thu 7–9 PM • Fri & Sat 7–10 PM, through Oct 31
A Naperville car wash has turned its tunnel into a haunted house you drive through. Fog, colored lights, live actors and whatever is waiting on the other side of the brushes — and your car comes out clean, which is the part that makes it genuinely funny. It’s eight bucks a car, so a van of four kids costs eight bucks. This is the veteran-owned place on 75th, not the Ace Lane location, and the haunted tunnel runs tonight. Posted hours come from the shop’s own social; double-check their page before you drive over.

💕 Why We Love It
It is the only scary thing on this list with a volume knob. Nervous kid? Doors locked, windows up, headlights on, and you’re through in two minutes. Braver kid? Crack a window. Nobody has to walk anywhere, nobody gets cold, and it’s a ten-minute errand that counts as an outing. This one came from a Naperville Facebook group, so thank you to whoever posted it.

Back by Popular Demand: Jessica DeVries’ Fall + Halloween Guide
We shared this last week and a lot of you opened it, so here it is again — this is the weekend it earns its keep. Local realtor Jessica DeVries of Southwestern Real Estate keeps a free spreadsheet of fall and Halloween events across the western suburbs: a day-by-day calendar, separate tabs for free and paid, and a color code for little-kid friendly, spooky and scary. Three picks is never going to cover the biggest Halloween weekend of the year. This does. Times and prices move around, so check each event’s own page before you go — she says the same.

🍽️ Kids Eat Free This Week!
Both of this week’s deals run on Thursday, Oct 29 — two nights before Halloween, when nobody has the energy to cook anyway.
⭐ Top Pick
🏒 Rookies Sports Bar & Grill — Geneva
THURSDAYS, ALL DAY
One free kids’ meal for every adult entrée, dine-in only, and it’s listed on their own events calendar every Thursday through Oct 29. Burgers and wings for you, chicken tenders and a game on roughly nine TVs for them. It’s a loud room, which is a feature when you’ve got a three-year-old.
1996 S. Kirk Rd., Geneva • (630) 402-0468
🍺 Sebastian’s Ale & Whiskey House — Lombard
THURSDAYS
Kids 10 and under eat free on Thursdays, and the same night they run a half-pound cheeseburger for $7 with a side — so the adult half of the table is cheap too. Ask the server for the details when you sit down; the age cutoff floats around on third-party sites but the restaurant’s own menu says 10 and under. Open until 11 PM Thursdays, closed Mondays.
801 E. Roosevelt Rd., Lombard • about 25 minutes from downtown Naperville

Two more free ones for Sunday if you still have fuel: Downtown Naperville Trick-or-Treat runs 10 AM to noon, and Halloween Happening at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion follows from 1 to 4 PM for kids 10 and under. That’s a full Sunday without spending a dollar. Then next Saturday is the real thing, and you’ll have had three dress rehearsals.
