Happy Friday, Naperville families! 🍂
Clocks went back last Sunday, so it’s dark before 5 now, and dinner suddenly feels like midnight. Downtown Naperville switched its holiday lights on Monday, which turns out to be a pretty good use of that dark hour. Three free things below, one of them involves smashing a pumpkin on purpose.

Downtown Naperville Lights Up for the Holidays ✨
The trees and rooftops downtown came on Monday and they stay on every night through the end of December. There’s no ceremony and nothing to buy a ticket for. You park, bundle everyone up, and walk. The storefronts are decorated too, so a lap down Jefferson and around the Riverwalk takes as long as your youngest allows. Go Friday after dinner and you’ll beat the weekend crowds.

Pumpkin Smash at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots 🎃
The Naperville Park District is back with its free pumpkin composting event, and yes, smashing is part of it. Bring your jack-o-lanterns and leftover pumpkins, but take out the candles, any metal and all the decorations before you leave the house. You stop at the weighing station first, then you smash your pumpkins yourself, or the staff will do it for you if your kid is suddenly shy about it. It clears the porch and the pumpkins go to compost instead of the trash. If the weather looks bad Saturday morning, check napervilleparks.org before you load the car.

Veterans Day Observance at the Lisle Veterans Memorial 🇺🇸
The Lisle Park District holds its Veterans Day observance Sunday at 11 AM, on the grounds of the Museums at Lisle Station Park. The Lisle Community Band plays and there’s a color guard. It’s a good one for kids who are old enough to stand still for a few minutes and ask what the flags mean. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, and this is the weekend version that doesn’t need a day off.

🍽️ Kids Eat Free This Week!
Both spots below are Wednesday plays, so mark it for Wednesday, Nov 11, which is Veterans Day. The second one is a family-friendly pick rather than a free deal we could confirm directly.

If the lights downtown are the plan, eat first and walk after, because everyone is more cheerful with something in them. And if Saturday morning starts slow, the pumpkin smash runs until noon, so there’s no need for a dawn start. Wear something you can wash.
See you out there,
The Naperville FunTimes Team 🧡
